Several persons are reportedly killed and many injured and houses destroyed in Anaku and Omor Communities of Ayamelum Local Government Area of Anambra State following a communal clash.
According to reports, the clash in Ayamelum local government which ensued between the two agrarian communities sharing a boundary followed a dispute over land which both communities claim ownership.
An eyewitness, Mr. Mike Nebife from Omor narrated that the Ayamelum Local Government Chairman had resolved the dispute last year in their favour and expressed shock over the latest development.
He alleged that on Friday, people from Anaku invaded the said land, erected beacons and attacked 2 farmers.
He said later, the people from Anaku allegedly blocked the road, destroyed houses and injuring more people including a former Chief Justice of Anambra State.
President-General of Anaku, Mr. Friday Nwuba also alleged that the people of Omor invaded the community on Sunday morning destroying houses, while some people were feared dead. He appealed for urgent security reinforcement.
Police spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga who confirmed the incident, said normalcy had returned to the communities following visits by Commissioner Christopher Owolabi and a team of officers early Sunday morning.
According to Ikenga, “The Commissioner of Police, Chris Owolabi earlier this morning, of 16th May, 2021 led combine team of police operatives and special forces to scene on a spot assessment.
“Normalcy has been restored in the area. The CP urges the good people of the state especially those in the area not to panic but work with the police and other security agencies in identifying the bad elements among them.”
