Sacking Of Service Chiefs Is A Presidential Prerogative- Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday 21st July 2020, released a statement where he said the appointment or sacking of Service Chiefs, is the sole responsibility of the President, and that he will always do what is right for the Nation.

The statement by President Muhammadu Buhari, comes a few hours after members of the National Assembly (The Senate) passed a resolution, calling for the immediate sacking of Service Chiefs, due to the high rate of insecurity in the country, especially in the North.

The statement from the President was an immediate responds to the resolution passed by the Senate on Tuesday.

The Senate in their resolution on Tuesday, had called on the Service Chiefs to resign or get sacked for rising insecurity in the nation, especially the recent killing of soldiers and the alleged mass resignation in the military.

The resolutions of the Senate followed consideration of a motion titled: “Rising casualties among Nigerian soldiers and other security agencies” by the Chairman, Senate Committee on Army, Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume (Borno South).

But in a statement released on the official Twitter handle of the Presidency, on Tuesday, and titled “Service Chiefs: Position of Presidency on the resolution by the Senate” said President Buhari reserves the right to appoint or sack Service Chiefs.

The statement reads:

The Senate on Tuesday adopted a resolution calling on the Service Chiefs to resign or be sacked due to the multi-pronged security challenges in the country.

“The Presidency notes the resolution, and reiterates that appointment or sack of Service Chiefs is a Presidential prerogative, & President Muhammadu Buhari, in his capacity as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, will do what is in the best interest of the country at all times,” the Presidency said.
