DJ Cuppy is trying her best not to allow anyone to tag her as the ‘Afrobeat Queen’ or fans thinking that when she said she is the Afrobeat Princess, she was trying to call herself the Queen.
Responding to questions and friendly criticism from fans following her previous post on her social media page calling herself ‘Afrobeat Princess’ and others wanting her to call herself the Queen, DJ Cuppy, taking to her Twitter handle, told her fans that she is too young and inexperience to be the Afrobeat Queen.
While DJ Cuppy who is still 27 might not be young when it comes to age, she is clearly young when it comes to the music business and the entertainment industry in general. This she was pointing out to her fans in her latest post, and it could also be her own way of saying, other female entertainers have been there before, and are still doing way better than her.
Each time the debate of who is the true Afrobeat Queen comes up, the two names that usually pops up are the likes of Tiwa Savage and Yemi Alade. These two might not be as big as the likes of Davido, Wizkid and BurnaBoy, but they are up there with them, standing their grounds and challenging the narratives. Even with the stiff competition in a male-dominated industry, their voices have been well received.
While a lot of people have congratulated her for her debut album and how she has improved a lot, DJ Cuppy is not letting all that get to her head, as she knows there is still a lot that needs to be done to be up there with Tiwa and Yemi.
She had recently dropped her hotly anticipated debut album, she titled, ‘Original Copy’ last month and the latest single from the album is doing well so far.
The 12-track release features songs with Wyclef Jean, Julian Marley, Fireboy, Rema, Teni, and more.
Original Copy features an array of high-profile collaborations and sees Cuppy tap into a sound she describes as neo-Afrobeats, with the 12-track releasing tackling themes ranging from independence to love lost and African pride.
The album features singles like ‘Jollof On The Jet’, the global sensation featuring Rema and RayVanny that has charted in over 15 countries, and the recently-released ‘Karma’ featuring award-winning dancehall star Stonebwoy.
Further star-studded tracks include Grammy winner, Wyclef Jean, making an appearance on the feel-good track, ‘Wale’, Bob Marley’s son, Julian, linking up with Nigerian favourite, Sir Shina Peters, on the cross-continental anthem ’54.’
The project also features UK breakout stars, Ms Banks and Darkoo. Creating this body of work was a journey for Cuppy.
“I went back to my roots, where I am from; Epe and mixed with the locals for inspiration. I visited my family’s farm and recorded lots of ambient and animal sound samples.
If you listen very carefully you can hear these in each track,” she told Society Watch.
