Popular Nigerian disc jockey and producer, Florence Otedola who goes by the stage name DJ Cuppy, has taken on the title, Afrobeat Princess, a few days after she released her debut album she titled ‘Original Copy’.
Although no female entertainer has come out to publicly lay a claim to the title ‘Afrobeat Princess’, her move of not picking the ‘Queen title’ is clearly her trying to avoid being dragged or trolled on social media or stepping on toes by picking a lesser title, especially in an African music industry dominated by Nigerians.
DJ Cuppy knowing fully well that there is that silent rivalry(so the fans think) between Tiwa Savage and Yemi Alade when it comes to the ‘Afrobeat Queen’ title and their dedicated fans, decided to avoid all the drama that she would have attracted to herself, by calling herself the ‘Afrobeat Queen’.
Taking to her official social media handle on Friday 4th September 2020, she shared an image of herself we don’t know if it is a paint, a photoshop or an actual photo, where she appeared like as Emperor, with her headphone and a red wig to match. She captioned the image with:
“HRH Cuppy, The Princess of Afrobeats,” she said.
She is clearly telling all who care to listen, that she is still learning, while also according the likes of Tiwa, Yemi Alade and all other female entertainers before her, with well-deserved respect.
Her recent debut album ‘Original Copy’ which is a 12-track album has features songs with the likes of Wyclef Jean, Julian Marley, Fireboy, Rema, Teni, and more.
