The Federal Government through the Foreign Affairs Minister, Mr Geoffrey Onyeama has reacted to the continued maltreatment of Nigerians in Ghana, saying they have watched with dismay the painful videos where authorities in Ghana are forcefully closing shops belonging to Nigerian traders.

Although the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama did not give full details as to the urgent steps the Federal government is about to take to address the situation, taking to his official Twitter handle on Monday 17th August 2020, while reacting to the maltreatment of Nigerians, he tweeted saying:

“Nigerian Government has watched with dismay the painful videos of the forceful closure of the shops of Nigerian traders in #Ghana. Urgent steps will be taken. #StayHomeSaveLives #COVID19
@NigeriaGov @DigiCommsNG @ecowas_cedeao,” he tweeted.

The reaction from the Government is coming after a viral video surfaced online showing some members of Local Union of GUTA in Koforidua in the Eastern region forcefully closed the shops belonging to Nigerians, where they kicked against the influx of foreigners, mostly Nigerians in the retail business, contrary to the laws of Ghana.

The local GUTA chapter also issued an ultimatum demanding the closure of all retail shops belonging to Nigerians by August 31, 2020.

They also threatened to unleash thugs to forcefully eject the Nigerians from the local market if their calls are not heeded.

The latest incident is coming after a few weeks after the Nigerian Embassy in Ghana was demolished, and other reported cases of maltreatment of Nigerians by Ghanaians in their country.
