Manchester City star, Raheem Sterling has apologized for allowing his emotions to get a better part of him after he was sent home following clash with a national teammate, and Liverpool defender, Joe Gomez.
Football fans woke up on Tuesday 12th November 2019, to the news that Raheem Sterling has been axed from the England team that will be doing battle with Montenegro in the Euro 2020 qualifiers on Thursday, following a clash with Joe Gomez. But given what we saw over the weekend, in the Premier League game between Liverpool and Manchester City, where City were thrashed 3-1, and that few seconds where Joe Gomez and Raheem Sterling clashed, it is not surprising that they took the beef into Three Lions training camp on Monday.
Raheem Sterling taking to his social media page to admits that he was his wrong which the way he acted, said:
“First and foremost, everyone knows what that game means to me! Everyone knows that I am not that way inclined and more to the point. Both Joe and I have had words and figured things out and moved on. We are in a Sport where emotions run high and I am man enough to admit when emotions got the better of me.
We move this is why we play this sport because of our love for it. Me and @joegomez5 are good we both understand it was a 5-10 second thing it’s done we move forward and not make his bigger than it is.
Let’s get to focus on our game on Thursday” he had said.
The Football Association on their part said Sterling had been dropped “as a result of a disturbance in a private team area”.
Gareth Southgate reacting to the incident on Monday, said: “Unfortunately the emotions of yesterday’s game were still raw.
“One of the great challenges and strengths for us is that we’ve been able to separate club rivalries from the national team.
“We have taken the decision to not consider Raheem for the match against Montenegro on Thursday. My feeling is that the right thing for the team is the action we have taken.
“Now that the decision has been made with the agreement of the entire squad, it’s important that we support the players and focus on Thursday night,” he said.
The Three Lions are top of Euro 2020 Qualifying Group A, three points clear of the Czech Republic and four ahead of Kosovo with the top two nations advancing.
A win or a draw for Southgate’s side will see them qualify. England then plays their final group match away in Kosovo on Sunday.
Since the decision, some fans still do not think it was the right decision, given that there were two players involved, and Joe Gomez allegedly provoked Raheem Sterling into reacting. So, if you are going to send anybody home, it should be Gomez, or both players some fans have expressed.
