Buhari signs bill changing Prison Service, to Correctional Service

President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday 14th August 2019 signed a bill changing the name of the Nigeria Prison Service to Correctional Service.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters, Senator Ita Enang who disclosed the change from Prison service to Nigerian Correctional Service, to the media on Wednesday, explained that the Correctional Service is made up of Custodial and Non Custodial Service

He said that the Non Custodial Service was intended to be a place of reformation and that the person sentenced under this will not stay in custody but will have remediation.

This is clearly a major move to the criminal justice reform in the country, and one that should be applauded. But there is still alot more that needs to be done so that the reforms does not just happen in name change alone, but in all areas.
