The Major Opposition Political party in Nigeria, the Peoples Democratic Party has condemned the alleged plans to assassinate the governor of Rivers State, and member of the PDP Governor Nyesom Wike.
The Party which in a letter blamed the ruling political party, the All Progressives Congress and the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed for threatening the Governor with arrest.
The statement said the Minister in a press briefing in Abuja told Journalist when asked about the Governor’s allegation said, if not that the Governor enjoys immunity as guaranteed by the Nigeria Constitution, he would have been arrested for making such an allegation.
This statement did not go down well with the PDP, as they call the threat from the Minister as careless, saying such statement from the Minister and the Federal Government further confirms the alleged planned assassination as cried out by the Governor of Rivers State, Wike.
In a Statement released by the PDP’s National Publicity Secretary Mr Kola Ologbondiyan, said the APC and Lai Mohammed have plans to silence the governor, saying:
The outburst by the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government that it would have dragged in Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike, but for his constitutional immunity, confirms the fears that government wants to silence the opposition.
We condemn in very strong terms, the further threats against Governor Wike by the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, who arrogantly dismissed the governor’s allegation that there was a plot by the Federal Government to kill him in a crowd.
Nigerians will recall that the PDP had earlier raised the alarm over plots to harass, implicate and orchestrate untoward situations like assassinations, accidents, inexplicable “armed robbery” attacks, high profile abduction & sudden disappearances of opposition leaders & members.
The Statement while condemning the Minister of Information, questioned why the APC and Lai Mohammed did not call for an investigation into the Governor’s claims rather than threaten the Governor with Arrest. The Statement continued with:
It is shocking that instead of calling for an investigation into the serious revelation, the Federal Government resorted to siege mentality to scare the governor, ostensibly to cover up the severity of the allegation.
The ruling party are yet to release thie reply, as I trust Festus to fire back in double dose…lol…I am loving this!
