Minister of Agriculture, Audu Ogbeh drops yet another bombshell to the amazement of Senate Committee on Agriculture, as he told the committe on live TV, that there are some Nigerians who use their cellphones to order for pizza from London.
The minister told the Senator Abdullahi Adamu led committee on Agriculture, where he had appeared to defend the 2019 budget of his ministry. He said that these Nigerians order for their pizza, which is usually done at night, and that these same orders will then be imported into the country by the British airways the following morning.
He said:
“Do you know, sir, that there are Nigerians who use their cellphones to import pizza from London; they buy in London and bring it on British Airways in the morning to pick up at the airport. It is a very annoying situation and we have to move a lot faster in cutting down some of these things.”
Audu Ogbeh who frowned at the increasing rate at which Nigeria import virtually everything, said “Toothpick every year costs us 18 million dollars; tomato paste costs us 400 million dollars. Meanwhile, a basket of tomatoes is less than N2,000.
“The farmers are losing money because the processors do not have enough funds to set up factories. Two factories have started off. I am sure by the end of next year we can comfortably tell the importers of tomato paste to stop.”
The chairman of the committee also concur with the minister saying,“What is eating deep into our capacity to develop are the little things,” he said.
“Go to these major shopping malls in Abuja, Kano, Lagos, go to the sections where they sell vegetables, any of them, they are imported from South Africa.” he said
Meanwhile, the bombshell by Audu Ogbeh on the importation of pizza have been generating alot of reactions from Nigerians on social media, with some alleging that it is the same politicians who are revealing all these are still the guilty ones as they are the one engaging in the act of importation, especially pizza.
I also reason with them, as an average Nigerian cannot afford to order for pizza with his or her cellphones and gets a delivery via British airways…na who wan pay the money…. lol…Audu Ogbeh should give us some names jare…lol
