The Nigerian Senate has confirmed the five Central Bank of Nigeria nominees sent to it by President Muhammadu Buhari just a few days ago. The confirmation is coming after the President sent in the names of Aisha Ahmad and Edward Lametek both as Deputy Governors, to fill the gap created due to the retirement of former Deputy Governors who held the positions. Others nominated for members of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) board are Professor from University of Ibadan, Professor Adeola Adenikinju, Aliyu Sanusi and Robert Asogwa as members MPC board.
All the nominees which were on the 14th of March referred to the Senate Committee on Banking and Finance and have since been confirmed by the Senate. This was reported in a statement made available on their social media site. The Statement reads:
Today the Senate confirmed five nominees of the Central Bank of Nigeria.
“The Nominees confirmed include: Aisha Ahmad and Edward Lametek both as Deputy Governors-and Adeola Adenikiju, Aliyu Sanusi and Robertt Asogwa and members of MPC.
We promised the country last week that within a week, we would carrout this confrimation and we have done this. I thank you all for your cooperation and I thank the executtive for their continued cooperation.
Let me also commend and congratulate Mrs Aisha Ahmad for her nomination to this very competitive role. The two deputy Governors are coming in a time where the economy is in a major issue. We have just come out of recession and we need to continue with our growth and see the sustainability of the foreign exchange and other related challenges.
We hope that the two Deputy Governors will work with the CBN Governor to move our economy in the right direction. We hope also that you all will work closely with the National Assembly to update us on progress achieved by the CBN”
