Ten passengers reportedly died in the early hours of Saturday when a Toyota bus crashed into a truck on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway.

According to reports, the Lagos-Ibadan expressway crash occurred at about 4:30am around Oniworo axis of the highway, involving a Toyota Haice bus marked KLD539XA and a Mack container truck with no registration number.

The Spokesman of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Florence Okpe, confirmed the Lagos-Ibadan expressway crash incident on Saturday to newsmen in Abeokuta.

Okpe said 19 persons – 13 male and 06 female adults – were involved in the crash out of which 10 died, two sustained injuries while others were rescued unhurt.

“The suspected causes of the crash were road obstruction on the part of the truck and excessive speed on the Toyota bus which led to loss of control and ran into the truck at the rear,” she explained.

According to her, the injured victims were taken to Victory Hospital, Ogere, Ogun State, for medical attention while the corpses were deposited at Ipara morgue.

She quoted the Sector Commander, Ahmed Umar to have expressed sadness over the incident, saying motorists have failed to obey “simple traffic rules.”

“He also emphasizes on poor visibility due to harmattan haze and that motorists should put on the headlamp when the weather is poor. He cautions motorists especially the truck drivers for the noon display of caution signs whenever there is breakdown on the road,” Okpe said.

The FRSC Spokesman also quoted Umar to have commiserated with the family of the crash victims and asked them to contact FRSC Ogunmakin for more information about the crash.
