The Russian authorities are increasing the sanctions against Western social platforms, as they restrict access to Twitter in the country, AFP reports.

According to the report by AFP, Russian authorities after attacking Facebook, seem to be tightening their sanctions against Twitter.

This Saturday evening, February 26, the official platform support account announced that it had found restrictions targeting Russian Internet users.

The platform was already targeted in the spring of 2021 by forced connection slowdowns, at the initiative of the Russian authorities, on all smartphones and half of the computers. She had also been threatened with total blockage in the country.

“We have become aware that access to Twitter is restricted for some Russians and we are working to keep our service safe and functional,” said the Twitter support account.

Since the beginning of the invasion of Ukraine, Russian authorities have targeted American social networks, accusing them of “censoring” Russian state media by signalling the presence of false information to Internet users.

On February 25, Russia announced to “limit” access to Facebook, while slowing down access to the platform to make it more difficult. A decision that was followed by sanctions from Facebook , which banned Russian state media from broadcasting advertising or monetizing their content.

Tension has grown between Russian authorities and US platforms in recent months. At the end of 2021, a Russian court ordered Google to pay the equivalent of 87 million euros for not having removed “banned” content.

In September 2021, Russia threatened to block YouTube – a subsidiary of Google – in the country after the German version of the Russian public channel RT was suspended.
