Trevor Peacock, who famously played Jim Trott on The Vicar of Dibley, has died at the age of 89.

The death of Trevor Peacock was confirmed by his agent in a statement to Associated Press. His family also released a statement confirming his death, where they said:

“Trevor Peacock, actor, writer and songwriter, died aged 89 on the morning of 8 Mar from a dementia-related illness.”

As Jim on the The Vicar of Dibley, Peacock was best known for the character’s idiosyncratic stammer, which saw him repeat the word “no” over and over again before finishing a sentence.

Dawn French, who portrayed the Vicar at the centre of the show, led tributes to Peacock on Twitter, sharing a photograph of the pair along with the caption: “Night Trev. I love you.”

Peacock, who was born in Edmonton, London, had a long career in film, television and theatre, with credits including the films Hamlet (1990), Fred Claus (2007) and Quartet (2012).

On stage, he worked regularly with Manchester’s Royal Exchange theatre and starred in productions of Waiting for GodotDeath of a SalesmanThe Crucible and The Merry Wives of Windsor, among many others.

Peacock was also a talented songwriter, writing a number of hits for the pop act The Vernons Girls, as well as the lyrics for a musical titled Passion Flower Hotel.

His final acting role was an appearance in a 2015 Vicar of Dibley special in aid of Comic Relief.

Peacock is the fifth major cast member from The Vicar of Dibley to die in recent years.

Roger Lloyd-Pack, who portrayed farmer Owen Newitt, died in 2014, followed by the death of actor Liz Smith (who played amateur cook Letitia Cropley) in 2016, and the deaths of Emma Chambers (Alice) and John Bluthal (Frank) in 2018.
