Nigerians are protesting against the annual New Year broadcast message from President Muhammadu Buhari. They explained that President Buhari’s New Year broadcast message represents a bad omen and should not be the first thing they hear or see on the first day of 2021.

They said they will boycott the planned New Year broadcast message by turning off their television set. Others said they would rather watch porn or sleep until 10:am when the President might have finished reading out his New Year broadcast message to other Nigerians.

Nigerians took to their Twitter handle to drag President Muhammadu Buhari, a few hours after a statement was released on Thursday 31st December 2020, by his Senior Special Assistant on Media, Mr Garba Shehu, where the Presidency stated that the President will be addressing Nigerians on Friday 1st January 2021.

Garba Shehu in his message, said Television, radio and other electronic media outlets are enjoined to join the network services of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) and Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) respectively, for the broadcast which starts by 7am.

Since the released statement, Nigerians have taken to their respective social media handles to protest against the broadcast. See some of the reactions:

Thanks for the update. I shouldn’t start my New year with Buhari speaking to me.

We don’t start a good year on a bad note. He better make that broadcast before 2020 ends. At least we’ll know the broadcast left with 2020.
