Resident Doctors To Begin Indefinite Strike On Monday

The Chairman, Association of Resident Doctors of Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) Dr Abubakar Nagoma Kano says no fewer than ten medical doctors are infected with the coronavirus, after testing positive while treating patients at the hospital.

Dr Nagoma who confirmed this to newsmen in Kano said the doctors got infected while treating patients who came to the hospital with normal symptoms that later turned out to be COVID-19.

He further revealed that the affected health professionals were resident doctors undergoing training and consultant doctors in the hospital.

Dr Abubakar Nagoma maintained that the 10 medical doctors were confirmed positive for COVID-19. Eight of them are already in the isolation centre, while the remaining two are in self-isolation at their homes because they do not have any symptoms.

He noted that the result of the screening carried out on doctors and other health workers were yet to be out.

He attributed the vulnerability of the doctors to the negligence of patients to put on face masks when coming to hospitals and lack of adequate Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) for doctors’ safety.

According to the doctor, “another challenge was deliberate hoarding of information on COVID-19 by some patients, which exposed many medical doctors and other health workers to the disease.
