The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has confirmed an additional 12 new cases of the coronavirus, as the total confirmed cases in Nigeria as at Wednesday 1st April 2020, jumps to 151, from 139 just yesterday.
According to the NCDC, the additional Twelve new cases were the recent cases where we have nine in Osun, two in Edo and one in Ekiti State.
The additional twelve new cases bring the total figure to 151 confirmed cases of COVID19 reported in Nigeria, with Nine discharged cases and two deaths.
According to the Minister of Health, Dr Ehanire, as of April 1, Nigeria has recorded 151 infections with Lagos and the FCT still having the highest numbers of 82 and 28 respectively.
Dr Ehanire while giving a breakdown of the cases, said the cases show that about 70% are male while about 30% are female.
“The age range is mostly between 30 and 60 years but I must be quick to stress that both men and women of all ages can be infected,” he added.
He said the Federal Ministry of Health is using the window of opportunity of the lockdown in the FCT, Lagos and Ogun, to accelerate activities to detect, isolate and treat cases.
“This is important because our ability to achieve the objectives in these states and the FCT will largely define our success in slowing the spread of the infection in our country,” he said.
There are over 1000 bed spaces ready for isolation and treatment of mild to moderate cases, he said.
“We have ICU units ready in Gwagwalada and national hospitals for those who may have complications especially those with underlying illnesses like tuberculosis, HIV, Cancer and also the elderly”.
On the additional twelve cases recorded The nine new COVID-19 patients in Osun state came into the country from Benin Republic by road.
The minister said the patients were originally coming from Cote d’Ivoire and had passed through Benin Republic from where they were to link their destination by road.
He said the vehicle carrying several people, all Nigerians, was intercepted and the passengers were isolated and tested.
Osun has so far recorded 14 cases of the disease, the third-highest in the country. Lagos state has 82 cases while the federal capital territory (FCT) has 28 COVID-19 patients.
