TCN Explains Nationwide Power Supply Shortage

The Transmission Company of Nigeria has explained the cause of nationwide power supply shortage, as a statement released on Saturday 7th March 2020, attributed the cause to constraints to Gas supply to some power stations.

The statement which was published by Ndidi Mbah who is the TCN Gas Public Affairs, said the nations’ power sector is experiencing power supply shortage caused by low gas supply which has restrained the ability of many thermal power stations to generate optimally.

Ndidi Mbah in the statement, listed the Thermal power plants affected by gas supply constraint to include Sapele NIPP, Olorunsogo NIPP, Ihovbor NIPP and Azura Edo Power Plants which generated zero Megawatts on Friday.

“Other thermal power plants equally affected but generated at lower capacities include Egbin (Stea ), Sapele (Steam), Delta (Gas), Geregu (GAs0, Omotosho (gas), Olorusogo (gas), Geregu NIPP, Alaoji NIPP, Omiotosho NIPP, Odukpani NIPP, Okpai (gas.steam0 and Omoku (gas) Power generating plants,” the TCN stated.

The statement continued by stating that,

“TCN hereby note that as a result of the prevailing gas constraint there has been a significant reduction in the quantum of power transmitted to the various distribution companies for onward supply to electricity consumers across Nigeria.

TCN has however discussed with the management of some of the affected power plants and many of them attributed their challenges to a gas pipeline and processing maintenance being carried out by their gas suppliers.

According to the management of some of the affected power plants, the maintenance of gas facilities are expected to last for ten days therefore, it is expected that the gas supply challenges will ease before end of next week,” the statement added.
