21-year-old Sofia Kenin has been crowned as the 2020 Australian Open champion, after beating Garbine Muguruza to clinch the first Grand Slam of the year, and her first-ever major title in Melbourne.

The American who was seeded 14th defeated Garbiñe Muguruza by 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 with the retractable roof at Rod Laver Arena closed because of rain.

She had never been past the fourth round of a major tournament until now. The win makes her the youngest Australian Open champion since Russian Maria Sharapova in 2008.

Speaking on her win, Sofia Kenin said:

“My dream has officially come true,” said Kenin, the eighth first-time women’s champion in the past 12 Slams.

“Dreams come true. If you have a dream then go for it – it will come true.

“These two weeks have been the best two weeks of my life.”

Sofia Kenin won the second set 6-2 to level the match after Garbiñe Muguruza took the first set 6-4. The 14th-seeded Kenin is playing in the final of a major for the first time. Muguruza has won Grand Slam titles at Wimbledon and the French Open.

Congratulations to her for her win!
