Serena Williams braids the hair of her daughter Olympia, as she appreciates the African culture and traditional family bonding and socialisation while doing the braiding.
The 23-time Grand Slam winner and who is ranked richest female athlete for 2019 by Forbes magazine, while sharing the photo of her daughter and herself sharing in that rich African culture of mother and daughter bonding, told a short story of the origin of hair braiding.
Serena Williams braids the hair of Olympia, saying she is adding to another generation of historic African traditions, which her family are proud of, as she passes it on to her beautiful daughter.
Taking to her Instagram page on Thursday, she shared a photo showing her Olympia beaming with a smile while she braids her hair. She captioned the epic photo with these pieces of intelligent information:

“Braiding started in Africa with the Himba people of Namibia. We have been braiding her hair for centuries. In many African tribes braided hairstyles were a unique way to identify each tribe. Because of the time it would take people would often take the time to socialize. It began with the elders braiding their children, then the children would watch and learn from them.
The tradition of bonding was carried on for generations, and quickly made its way across the world. I am honored to share this bonding experience with my own daughter and add another generation of historic traditions. @olympiaohanian”
Serena Williams has been that one woman that has never hidden her love for the African tradition and culture, as she has been one of those vocal voices that have always spoken up about issues that affect not just the Africa-American communities in American, but Africa as well and the entire black race, which she represents.
She clearly does not need an explanation as to why she decided to share a brief history of braiding and its origin, as she claims what rightfully belongs to her race that somehow is now being Westernise. Her caption is so deep and sends a strong message which we appreciate.
