Governor Ihedioha denies ordering the demolition of Akachi statue

The newly sworn in Governor of Imo State, Governor Ihedioha has embarked on the immediate demolition of all monuments built by his predecessor, former Governor Rochas Okorocha.

The demolition is coming barely 24 hours after assumption of office, as Governor Ihedioha kicks off his duty as the new Governor of Imo State, to restore the back to its former glory.

Governor Ihedioha was sworn-in as the sixth Executive governor of the state on Wednesday.

The Akachi tower which was commissioned by Vice President Osinbajo a week ago, and was supposed to serve as one of the many tourist attractions according to the former governor, was the first to be demolished. It was built on a reclaimed dumpsite that was abandoned by the previous administration, and Vice President Osinbajo who had visited the place on the invitation of Rocha Okorocha for the commissioning, had written this to describe the Akachi. He said:

“Earlier today, Governor Okorocha showed me around the AKACHI ground, currently under construction in Imo State. The Akachi ground signifies many important things, some of which are; a place of learning, praying, spiritual healing, and restoration through “the hand of God” hence the name ‘Akachi’.”

The demolition exercise was supervised by soldiers who barred journalists from covering the exercise.

The monument, a massive tower with the symbol of a hand on the Zenith, representing the hand of God, sits on an expansive plot of land, reserved for religious purposes.

There are fears that the new governor will also demolish other monuments in Owerri, the state capital, especially the famous statues.
Aside from the Akachi, there are others which we do not know whether or not Governor Ihedioha will order for their demolition, like the huge statue of prominent leaders around the world…we are watching.
