Napoli star Osimhen has paid tribute to former AC Milan star and President of Liberia, George Weah, after he netted his 47th Serie-A goal over the weekend, eclipsing the one-time world footballer of the year, and Liberian legend’s 46 goals record by an African in the league.

Weah’s record had stood since 1999.

The 24-year-old Nigeria and Napoli star Osimhen had scored the equaliser last week to earn his side their first Scudetto since 1990.

Sunday’s strike took his tally in the league to 23rd this season. With four goals ahead of Argentina striker Lautaro Martinez, the Super Eagle is keen to become the first African to win the highest-scorer gong in Italy. He has four games to do that, and taking to his official social media handle on Monday 8th May 2023, to praise the Liberian President for laying the foundation for him and other Africans. He said:

While Growing Up, I Have Always Admired The Great Achievements Of So Many African Legends And His Excellency Mr GEORGE WEAH Is One Of Them, An Icon In The World Of Football And Also A Leader To His People. Someone Who Has Motivated And Inspired Millions Of Young Talents Alike.

Yesterday, It Was Great Honor Breaking His Record As The Top Scoring African Player In Serie A History, An Achievement I will Forever Cherish, Mr George Weah Has Set A Foundation Of Excellence For Individuals Like Me To Emulate And His Legacy Will Forever Be Remembered.

I Celebrate This Milestone With Everyone Who Has Inspired And Supported Me In This Journey. Thank You For Your Contributions, GOD IS THE GREATEST,” he said.

Both Chelsea and Manchester United are interested in Victor Osimhen, who Napoli said he is not for sale, but reports from England is saying otherwise, as the Eagles star is already valued around £130million.
