The Emir of Kano, Mallam Muhammad Sanusi II has attributed poverty to the increasing population rise in Nigeria and other African countries.

The emir stated this on Thursday, 10th April 2019 at a round table discussion tagged “Leveraging on China-Nigeria relations to Re-industrialize the Economy” organized by the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria in Kano.

Muhammad Sanusi II explained further that the people living in northern Nigeria today are four-five times the number of people living in northern Nigeria in 1960 and the land has not increased, the revenues have not increased and there is no surprise that you are going to continue to have an increase in poverty.

He then called on the government to focus on issues of population growth by encouraging investment in a girl – child education in Nigeria.

The emir went on to state that “Decision that we have to make today is decisions that will have to aim to at reducing the rate of growth in population; may be unpopular today, but they are absolutely essential for the next generation. If we do not have demographic transition we are going to have an economic transition.
