Legendary Italian filmmaker Bernardo Bertolucci who was the director behind ‘Last Tango in Paris’ and so many other movies has died at the age of 77.

Bernardo Bertolucci died on Monday at his home in Rome, after battling with cancer. This was confirmed by his wife Clare Peploe, in a statement released a few hours ago.

Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi has since reacted to the sad news, describing Bertolucci as:
“Bernardo Bertolucci, one of the great masters of Italian cinema, has left us. I remember him as a spectator of his works, like everyone else. But also as a valuable advisory when we decided to invest more resources on cinema at Palazzo Chigi. Thank you Maestro, it was an honor. RIP”.

Some of the earliest and notable films by Bertolucci are: The Conformist, The Spider’s Stratagem, La commare secca, The Grim Reaper, and Last Tango in Paris and many others.
