UNIZIK Business Centre Gutted By Fire

The business centres located inside the Nnamdi Azikiwe University(UNIZIK)Awka in Anambra State, were in the early hours of Friday morning, gutted by fire, with properties worth millions of naira destroyed.

The sad incident was reported by the Police on Friday 12th March 2021.

According to the statement released and signed by the Anambra State Police Command Public Relations Officer, CSP Haruna Mohammed confirming the incident at UNIZIK, stated that the fire which has since been extinguished stared at about 1:30 am.

The fire outbreak was at a business centre behind the Faculty of Arts at UNIZIK and Police have already begun an investigation to ascertain circumstances surrounding the incident, and no casualty was recorded.

Some of the properties destroyed in the fire outbreak were computers, photocopy machines, fridges, generators, stationary and other valuable items.

According to the statement made available to the public by the Police, the Command stated that operatives led by DPO B Division Awka CSP Sani Ahmed on hearing the news quickly mobilised to the scene and cordoned off the area to prevent looting and further catastrophe.

“Fire Service was equally contacted and they responded promptly. The fire was extinguished with the help of firefighters and other sympathizers in the area.

No loss of life and no injury have been reported.

An investigation is ongoing to ascertain the extent of damage and circumstances surrounding the incident.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police CP Monday Bala Kuryas appealed to the public to always apply safety precautions especially by switching off all electrical appliances in their homes, business premises and workplaces when not in use in order to avert similar ugly incidents which could also lead to loss of lives and injuries.
