The Nigerian Senate has ordered the Inspector General of Police, Mr Ibrahim Idris to appear before it in the next 48hours, following the renewed killings in Benue State and another part of the country.
The move which was adopted at yesterday’s plenary before the Senate adjourned to go see one of their colleague at the National Hospital in Abuja, want the Inspector general of police to come and explain the ugly events that took place about two days ago in Benue State, where it was alleged that killer herdsmen invaded a church and killed worshippers and the two pastors there present.
Even the issue of what they called ‘poor treatment’ of their colleague Senator Dino Melaye in the hands of the Police, was also part of the reasons the Inspector General of Police is being summoned.
In a statement released by the Senate, they resolved to invite the IGP of Police, Ibrahim Idris, to brief the plenary in the Committee of the Whole, over the recent killings in Benue, and the arrest of Senator Dino Melaye. The statement quoting the Senate President, Senator Bukola Saraki Said:
“I think that the information Senate Leader wanted to pass, is that this morning, we were very concerned and we have sent our Deputy Leader out to go and look for him, but with the motions that I can see, it has gone beyond us sending representatives.
I appreciate the motions that have transpired in that area. The issue of the IGP briefing us should be immediate and that should be tomorrow and the DG and Chairman of Police should do that.”
“These actions whether we want to admit it or not is a threat to this democracy we are all fighting for. The excesses must be contained in the interest of all of us (including the people we are here to serve)
Senator Bukola Saraki while also speaking on the Benue killings said:
Following my conversation with Senator George Akume, a former Governor of Benue State, over the recent gruesome killings in the state, today, we resolved to invite the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris,…
This is also about Law & Order, and as such, we must all condemn this action. For the last 48hrs, I have not been able to reach the IG of Police, we cannot talk about security without collaboration with the Legislature.
