Whoopi Goldberg used her platform on The View to plead for a stop to the ‘politicization’ of the murder of Ukrainian immigrant Iryna Zarutska on a train in Charlotte last month, DailyMail reports.
‘Look, a young woman is dead. Let’s take that into consideration,’ Whoopi Goldberg, 69, said of the brutal August 22 stabbing of Zarutska, 23, by career criminal Decarlos Brown Jr., 34.
‘And yes, a man who should have been behind bars was loose and out. His mother begged them to take him and put him away.
‘So, stop politicizing this. This is not political. This has to do with how we take care of our sick Americans when they are in need.’
Zarutska’s slaying at the hands of a schizophrenic repeat offender was thrust into the national spotlight after surveillance video showing the vicious attack was released.
His sister revealed to the Daily Mail a recording of conversation she had with Brown days after the fatal stabbing, in which he said he wanted police to ‘investigate’ ‘materials’ that were ‘controlling’ him.
His mother, told CNN that in addition to his mental health woes, he was homeless and living at a local shelter.
In one interview, Dewitt said ‘the system failed him.’
Goldberg’s statements came after outlets like CNN took pains to defend Brown.
On Monday, CNN host Van Jones said we ‘don’t know why [Brown] did what he did,’ adding that ‘this man is hurting.’
‘It’s about the fact that we don’t know how to deal with people who are hurting in the way this man was hurting,’ Jones added.
‘Hurt people hurt people.’
A Daily Mail review of police records found that Brown was charged with misusing 911 as recently as January, when he told cops he believed someone had given him a ‘man-made’ material that controlled his actions.
He was released without bail and a trial pending when he allegedly stabbed Zaruska to death.
Brown served five years in prison for a 2014 armed robbery and was released in September 2020.
In February 2021, Brown was arrested for assaulting his sister in Charlotte and leaving her with minor injuries.
In July 2022, Brown was arrested for a domestic disturbance.
Brown’s arrest records go as back as 2007, when he was still a minor.
After his January arrest for misusing 911, his release was ordered following a written promise to appear for his next hearing.
The White House said the move left Brown Jr. ‘free to slaughter an innocent woman just months later.’
On Tuesday, it was announced that Brown had been charged federally, which raises the possibility he could face the death penalty if convicted.
