Trying co-stars Rafe Spall and Esther Smith are expecting their first child together.
The real-life couple Rafe Spall and Esther Smith went public with their romance in November 2022, after it was revealed Rafe and former Hollyoaks star Elize du Toit – who have three children together – had split after 12 years.
Rafe Spall and Esther Smith appeared on Tuesday’s Lorraine to promote the fourth series of the Apple TV+ comedy, and Esther said: ‘I’ve got a little bump.’
When the host asked if the pregnancy could be weaved into a potential series five plot, Esther said: ‘We hope there’s another series.’
Rafe – who is the son of Harry Potter star Timothy Spall – added: ‘We don’t know yet.’
Rafe Spall and Esther Smith admitted they can’t wait to welcome their child into the world, and hope to start work on a fifth season afterwards.
Esther said: ‘We’ll have a baby, and then we’ll carry on, perhaps, with that [‘Trying’].’
Rafe added: ‘We’re very excited.’
In Trying, Rafe and Esther portray couple Jason Ross and Nikki Newman who want to become parents, but struggle to conceive a child.
Rafe previously admitted he loved filming the show because he got to spend time with Esther.
Speaking in July 2022, he said: ‘I get to hang out with Esther all day. We really get on. She’s my favourite person I’ve ever done acting with.’
He also said: ‘People often comment on the chemistry we have. I’m really pleased that people enjoy it, but they won’t enjoy it as much as we do.’
As well as Trying, Esther is best known for appearing in Uncle and Cuckoo, as well as portraying Delphi Diggory in play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.
In the upcoming series of Trying, which first aired in 2020, the couple’s life has fast-forwarded six years.
Nikki (Smith) and Jason (Spall) are experienced adopters having built a lovely little nuclear family, enriched by an extraordinary support network.
The actor married former Hollyoaks cast member Elize du Toit in 2010 but the couple separated in 2021 after growing apart(Elize and Rafe pictured in 2017).
However, as their teenage daughter, Princess (Rayner), starts to yearn for a connection with her birth mother, Nikki and Jason find themselves confronted with the ultimate test of their parenting skills.
Trying returns to AppleTV+ on Wednesday, May 22 with the first 2 episodes followed by new episodes every Wednesday through July 3.
Rafe married Elize before moving to The Cotswolds with her in 2019. They share children Lena, 11, Rex, 10, and another six-year-old son.
Rafe previously said he regretted not spending more time with his children, telling the i newspaper: ‘Unfortunately I don’t have any other skills to exchange for cash.
‘This is all I have and so I have to go off and do my acting in order to keep them in hummus.’
