Tributes have been paid to a rugby player Michael Allen who was stabbed to death outside of a nightclub as seven others were left injured.

Michael Allen, 36, was attacked in the rampage at around 3.15am close to the Eclipse bar in Bodmin.

His family have today paid tribute to their ‘much-loved’ son, brother, grandson and uncle.

They said in a statement: ‘Mike was simply a much-loved son, brother, grandson and uncle, who loved his dogs.

‘His family would like to respectfully request privacy at this time.’

Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed a 24-year-old man from the area had been arrested on suspicion of murder, attempted murder and causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

Officers were granted extra time to detain and question the suspect at Bodmin Magistrates’ Court on Monday.

Detectives said they were not looking for anyone else in connection with the attack.

Mr Michael Allen was described as a ‘kind, fun-loving man’ by friends last night.

Sam Perring posted on Facebook: ‘Absolutely devastated and heartbroken.

‘All the laughs, adventures and impossible sideways BMW moments we’ve had through the years.
‘Love you so much mate.’

NHS staff nurse Alex Rhodes wrote: ‘What a horrible, cruel world we live in. Michael, love you always cuz.’

Chris Rich added: ‘Literally can’t believe what I’ve heard.

‘Always such a lovely guy you didn’t deserve anything like that to happen to you and no one should have to worry about going out and something like this happening. Absolutely vile.’

And Christine Zammit said: ‘So sad, another good one taken way too soon. Thinking of all his friends and family at this tragic time. This world is a cruel place.’

Lankelly Fowey Rugby Club posted a tribute online to the player from Bodmin RFC.

They said: ‘All of us at Lankelly RFC are deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Chabel (Mike Allen). Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and the entire Bodmin RFC community during this difficult time.

Please accept our heartfelt condolences and know that we stand with you in this time of mourning. Bodmin RFC’
Adie Dove said: ‘My heart breaks for your family and friends. My heart breaks for Bodmin today. Sending so so so much love.’

A tribute site has also been set up at Bodmin Rugby Club, where people can gather to remember Mr Allen.

Supt Rob Youngman said it was not yet known whether Mr Allen and alleged knifeman knew each other.

He added: ‘At this moment in time we are working to continue to understand the motivation behind this incident. The relationship, if any, between those involved is not clear at this stage.

‘We believe some members of the group who were injured had been in Eclipse nightclub. They were then outside in Castle Canyke Road when the incident happened.’
