Vincent Verschuere: Breeder Fined €102k Over Noisy Cows

Vincent Verschuere, a French farmer from Oise was ordered to pay €102,000 in damages to six residents who sued him for allowing his cows to constitute a nuisance to the neighbourhood, AFP reports.

“It is more a condemnation of agriculture than a condemnation of my exploitation”. Vincent Verschuere, the Saint-Aubin-en-Bray framer in the Oise was ordered to pay 102,000 euros in damages to his neighbours for the smells and noise emitted by his farm.

The Court of Appeal of Amiens confirmed in March a decision of the court of Beauvais of 2018, which had recognized, in the first instance, the “abnormal neighbourhood disturbances”, of the exploitation.

“When I took over the installation, we had to build a building to accommodate the dairy cows according to the European standards that are imposed on us”, explains this Friday on RMC Vincent Verschuere, the breeder who has 260 cows .

“The building permit was granted to us, with a distance waiver since we had no land less than 100 meters from homes. Then the building was built and 6 residents came together to attack us”.

Today, he is still summoned to repay the loan taken out to build the building, which cost 600,000 euros. “It is not materially possible to pay the loan plus the fine of 102,000 euros and other investments”, assures the farmer.

40% OF BREEDERS UNDER DISTANCE DEROGATION IN THE OISE

“It is more a condemnation of agriculture than a condemnation of my farm, since in the Oise, we are 40% of breeders to be under derogation from distance given that our farms have been in the heart of villages for generations. “, he regrets.

If Vincent Verschuere recognizes that manure, once a month, can be inconvenient for local residents and that, “whether you are 100, 200 or 500 meters away”, he considers that it is one of the principles of life in the countryside: “The noise and smells of my cows are nuisances in the countryside, but nothing abnormal. Otherwise our countryside must be sanitized”, laments the farmer.

A rally is to take place this Friday in support of Vincent Verschuere in Saint-Aubin-en-Bray his commune. Are expected in particular Christiane Lambert, president of the FNSEA and Xavier Bertrand , president of the Hauts-de-France region among others: “The primary goal of our mobilization is that our politicians do what is necessary. law came out in January 2021 on the sensory heritage which protects the noises and smells of our countryside”, recalls the breeder, assuring that he will appeal to the Court of Cassation.
