President Muhammadu Buhari of Nigeria has congratulated the Prime Minister of Ethiopia, Abiy Ahmed for winning the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize.

President Muhammadu Buhari took to his social media page a few hours after Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed was announced the winner of the Nobel Peace Prize for 2019, and in his statement he said, the recognition is a good sign for peace processes within the countries and across borders in Africa. He also hopes and prayer that Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s global recognition will spur more interest in issues of peace in Africa, and bring beneficial outcomes to the entire continent.

This was the statement by President Buhari on Friday 11th October 2019:

I congratulate Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, who was today declared winner of the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize for his remarkable work to end the 20-year conflict between Ethiopia & Eritrea. This recognition is a good sign for peace processes within countries and across borders in Africa.

I believe that the development of Africa is strongly tied to peaceful co-existence, and to deliberate efforts by governments and citizens to sustain harmony within and between countries. We must do more in collaboration and partnership for peace across the continent.

It is my hope and prayer that Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s global recognition will spur more interest in issues of peace in Africa, and bring beneficial outcomes to the entire continent” the President stated.

As we reported earlier, the Prime Minister of Ethiopia, Abiy Ahmed was awarded the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to achieve peace and international cooperation, and in particular for his decisive initiative to resolve the border conflict with neighbouring Eritrea.

Berit Reiss-Andersen, the chairwoman of the five-member Norwegian Nobel Institute that awards the Nobel Peace Prize while speaking on the award, had said,  Abiy Ahmed was named for his moves to end his country’s conflict with next door Eritrea within months of coming to office in 2018. He signed a “Joint Declaration of Peace and Friendship,” with Eritrean Prime Minister Isaias Afwerki that ended the conflicts.
