President Zelensky has confirmed that the city of Irpin, has been liberated from the Russian forces, as Tuesday marks the 34th day of Russian aggression against Ukraine.
According to reports, President Zelensky on Monday, stated that the town of Irpin, near kyiv, has been recaptured from Russian forces.
The town of Irpin has been the scene of fierce fighting on the outskirts of kyiv since the Russian invasion.
Oleksandr Markushyn a local mayor, said Russian troops had been forced out of Irpin, which has been the scene of fierce fighting as Moscow’s troops have sought to advance towards Kyiv.
“We have good news today — Irpin has been liberated,” Mr Markushyn said in a video post on Telegram
“We understand that there will be more attacks on our town and we will defend it courageously.”
“Now we are carrying out a mopping-up operation.”
Mr Markushyn said people should not return to Irpin as it was “not safe yet” and he expected further attacks.
He added that Ukrainian forces would next move to liberate other cities near Kyiv, including Bucha, Hostomel and Vorzel.
“The city is now liberated, but it is still dangerous to be there,” Interior Minister Denys Monastyrsky also said on television, confirming what Oleksandre Markouchine, the mayor, had said earlier.
“In fact, this is what is happening now in a parallel way: the armed forces are advancing, the police are advancing and immediately a complete cleaning is done in the streets,” the minister said again.
The main checkpoint on the road to Irpin out of Kyiv was open again on Monday, two weeks after it was closed to the media following the death of an American journalist.
