Guinea Coup: ECOWAS Chairman Visits Conakry

The President of Ghana, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo who is the chairperson of the Authority of Heads of States of ECOWAS, is in the Republic of Guinea to meet with the coup leaders who ousted President Alpha Conde from power.

The Ghanaian President was accompanied to Guinea by President of the Republic of Côte d’Ivoire, His Excellency Alassane Ouattara, where they are expected to hold talks with the military leadership in Guinea, led by Colonel Mamadi Doumbouya, centring largely on the fate of President Alpha Condé, amongst others.

The visit by the ECOWAS chairperson is coming just a day after leaders from the West African sub-region gathered in Accra Ghana in an extraordinary Summit to discuss the political situation in the Republic of Guinea.

The ECOWAS delegation was on Friday 17th September received at the airport by coup leader, Colonel Mamadi Doumbouya and some of his men.

Before the visit, the 15-nation Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) had condemned the putsch that overthrew President Alpha Conde, the third coup in West and Central Africa since April.

The bloc suspended Guinea from the decision-making bodies of the organisation last week and sent a mission to meet the coup leaders.

Ghana Foreign Minister Shirley Ayorkor Botchway, who chairs the ECOWAS council of ministers, told a news conference in Accra that the mission would report back to ECOWAS leaders on Thursday.

“The presidents will consider the report and decide what to do. They’ll decide on how to put pressure on the coup-makers to bring Guinea back to constitutional rule,” Botchway said.

Nothing has been made public yet, as it is expected that Colonel Mamadi Doumbouya and his group, will do the needful and hand over power to a civilian government. But it is highly doubtful that ousted President Alpha Conde will be restored into power, given the third term controversy.
