Rachel Oniga a veteran Nollywood actress, who was well known across both the English and Yoruba movie industry, has died. She was 64.
According to the report by The Nation, her son Olatunji who unconfirmed the death of Rachel Oniga, told the outlet that the actress died from malaria and typhoid.
The son said the ‘Chief Daddy’ actress died around 10pm on Friday in Lagos, after returning from a movie set.
She was scheduled to resume for another film shoot on Saturday, July 31 when the news of her death filtered into town.
Her death was also confirmed by stakeholders in the TV and film industry.
Nollywood film director, and film festival founder, Fidelis Duker confirmed Oniga’s death.
He said: ‘Another Iroko has fallen. It’s true Rachel Oniga is dead. She died last night. It’s a sad loss for Nollywood.’
CEO of Best Of Nollywood, Seun Oloketuyi also confirmed the incident.
He said: “it’s sad we lost Madam Oniga. I heard and after confirmation, I was told that Madam Oniga has gone to be with the Lord.”
Rachel Tabuno Oniga was born on 23rd May 1957, in Ebute Metta, Lagos State.
The woman who hails from Eku in Delta State, began her acting career in 1993, shortly after her divorce. She has featured in over 200 productions – TV and films
She worked briefly at Ascoline Nigeria Limited, a Dutch Consultant Company before her first movie titled Onome.
Her debut Yoruba movie was Owo Blow in 1997.
She featured in many Nollywood movies, including English and Yoruba films.
