The United States of America, has officially removed Sudan from list of state sponsors of terror. This was confirmed by the U.S Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, and Sudanese Prime Minister on Monday.

The United States embassy, passing out the message of the U.S Secretary, posted this message on Facebook:

“The congressional notification period of 45 days has lapsed and the Secretary of State has signed a notification stating rescission of Sudan’s State Sponsor of Terrorism designation is effective as of today (December 14), to be published in the Federal Register,”

US President Donald Trump had in October said Sudan will come off the list after it pays compensation of $335m (£259m)to victims and families of al-Qaeda’s 1998 bombing of US embassies in Africa.

Sudanese Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok had responded by saying the funds had been transferred. Sudan was listed in 1993 when al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden lived there as a guest of the government. It was along with Iran, North Korea and Syria.

He also posted this message on his official Twitter handle on Monday 14th December 2020, saying:

“After 3 decades of global isolation on the #SSTL #Sudan officially rejoins the int’l community as a peaceful nation supporting global stability. This achievement comes with numerous opportunities for Sudan’s development & we thank everyone involved in making this happen,” he tweeted.

Secretary Pompeo also tweeted:

“US government account. Today is a historic day in the U.S.-Sudanese bilateral relationship, as Sudan’s designation as a State Sponsor of Terrorism is officially rescinded. I congratulate @SudanPMHamdok and the Sudanese people and look forward to building a stronger U.S.-Sudanese partnership.
