Italian side, Napoli has officially announced that their home ground, which before now was known as San Paolo Stadium, has now been re-named as ‘Diego Armando Maradona stadium’.

The move to re-named their stadium, was to honour their late player, and one of the legends of world’s football, and the man who popularized the number 10 shirt, Diego Armando Maradona.

The club confirmed this in an official statement released on Friday 4th December 2020.

The club in their statement said:

“SSC Napoli is delighted by the resolution signed by the entire City Council in dedicating the now former San Paolo Stadium to Diego Armando Maradona,” the statement stated.

The sad news of the death of Diego Maradona was reported on Wednesday, 25th November 2020, as he was said to have died after suffering a cardiac arrest.

The World Cup winner was reported to have passed away at his home in Buenos Aires, Argentina, at the age of 60.

Diego Maradona had earlier been hospitalised and required surgery after suffering a blood clot on his brain, but was pronounced dead some few weeks later. His body has since been laid to rest in a private cemetery, at his home country of Argentina.

Maradona played for Napoli from 1984 to 1991, where he made 188 appearances, more than he made for any other club in his career, and scored 81 goals.
