Nigeria and the Republic of Ethiopia are to ensure the establishment of a Joint Commission to boost the economic, political and diplomatic ties of the two nations.

A statement by the Special Assistant Media to the Minister of State Foreign Affairs Ibrahim Aliyu Indicates that this was parts of the outcome of a discussion between the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Ambassador Zubairu Dada when he received in his office the Ethiopian Ambassador to Nigeria Mr Azanaw Tadesse Abreha in Abuja

Ambassador Dada who acknowledged the robust relationship between the two countries dating back to the pre-colonial era said the establishment of the Joint Commission will facilitate more economic, political as well as diplomatic activities.

He explained that the Joint Commission was scheduled to take off in May this year but was delayed due to the outbreak of COVID-19.

Ambassador Dada while wishing the new Ethiopian Ambassador success on the assumption of duty in Nigeria, pledged to give him all necessary support and encouragement.

He commended Ethiopia for its leadership role in the continent and especially its efforts in promoting peace with its neighbour Eretria.

The Ethiopian Ambassador to Nigeria Mr Azanaw Tadesse Abreha briefed the Minister on the development so far as it concerns the construction of Dam in River Nile.

He said about eighty per cent sources of the river is from Ethiopia.

He said his country intends to generate about one thousand one hundred and fifty Mega Watt of electricity from the Nile River.

Ambassador Abreha, therefore, called for the support of Nigeria in this direction.
