The 92nd Academy Awards (Oscars) made history on Sunday 9th February 2020, as for the first time in the history of the award, a foreign-language film Parasite carted home the awards for a major category. The film took home the Oscars for the Best Picture and Best Animated feature film, respectively.
The wins by the South Korean film, Parasite came as a shock for so many, because no foreign-language film has ever won it; and also given the criticisms that greeted the disqualification of a Nigerian film, ‘Lion Heart’ by Genevieve Nnaji and many others.
This win clearly will give others the hope and inclusion they have longed for, and a positive sign that the Academy Awards are beginning to inject some kind of reform in the system. But there is still need for more inclusion, as the issue of race has been one of the issues raised over the years, and there seems not to be any change in that!
The parasite also won the major categories ahead of multiple nominees of Joker with 11 nominations, 1917, The Irishman and others.
It was also one of the eleven foreign-language films nominated for the lofty honour among them Life is Beautiful, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, and Roma
