Police have shot and killed four men suspected to be rapists, who were said to have gang-raped a woman to her death in the Southern area of India.
The actions by the police have been met with mix reactions, as while some praised the extrajudicial killing of the four suspected rapists, others condemned the actions of the Police, saying the men were yet to be formally charged with any crime before they were murdered.
According to the report, the Police had asked the four men after their arrest to take them to the crime scene where they allegedly forced themselves on the woman identified as a 27-year-old Priyanka Reddy who was a veterinarian. They allegedly confessed to have gang-raped her to death, and then set her body on fire.
The Police in return, after claiming that one of the suspects tried to grab an officer’s gun to escape, shot and killed the four suspected rapists at the crime scene. But while others praised their act, an MP says the officers had taken the law into their own hands.
About 300 people gathered at the crime scene in Shadnagar, near Hyderabad, to praise police for killing the suspects. Some hugged officers and lifted them into the air chanting ‘long live police,’ while others showered them with flowers.
This is clearly a case of a society where rape has become a daily occurrence, and both the Police and the citizens are fed up about the lack of justice from the Court, that even those who ought to be protecting the laws are the ones taking laws into their hands.
…an investigation have since been launched by the Indian authorities on the matter, but rape crime in India has been on the rise, that young girls and women are worried about being a potential victim.
