The open-casket celebration of the life and time of the late comedy great, Mr Witherspoon which took place on Tuesday, saw some of the big names from Hollywood film industry, who all gathered to pay their last respect as he makes his final journey.
The death of the ace comedian and actor which came as a shock to many, especially those that were closed to him and colleagues who had worked with him for years, saw the likes of David Letterman, Ice Cube, Richard Pryor, Robin Williams and Jay Leno leading the eulogies to John Witherspoon at the open-casket celebration of life.
Some other celebrity guest speakers included Cedric the Entertainer, George Wallace, Angela Gibbs and Bill Bellamy. Regina King couldn’t make it but she did send along a video message that was played on the big screen.
Guests at the celebration of life received a colourful program adorned with John’s infectious smile. The back-page included one of his most famous lines from “Boomerang” … “BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG!
The Witherspoon’s family had revealed in a statement posted on his social media accounts that the star had passed away at the age of 77.
The statement released by the family some days back announcing his death, reads:
“It is with deep sadness we have to tweet this, but our husband & father Mr Witherspoon has passed away,” the tweet read, which was accompanied by a photo of Mr Witherspoon smiling widely.
“He was a legend in the entertainment industry and a father figure to all who watched him over the years. We love you ‘POPS’ always & forever,” the statement concluded.
The Witherspoon family are asking that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to The Actors Fund or the Angela and John Witherspoon Family Foundation for the Arts.
