5th Aide To Boris Johnson Resigns From Downing Street

Boris Johnson looks like the man that will take over from Theresa May, as he has been announced as the winner of the Tory Leadership contest held in the House of Commons. He scored 114 votes which is the highest number of votes in the first ballot to select the Conservative party leader and next prime minister.

Other contenders in the Tory leadership contest alongside Boris Johnson were Michael Gove, Mark Harper, Jeremy Hunt, Andrea Leadsom and Esther McVey.

The contest saw Boris Johnson with 114 votes, Jeremy Hunt was second with 43, and Michael Gove third with 37 votes.

According to BBC, Seven candidates progress to the next round of voting next week. The two most popular MPs will be put to Tory party members in a final vote later this month.

The winner of the contest to succeed Theresa May is expected to be announced in the week of 22 July.

All 313 Conservative MPs voted in the first ballot.

Boris Johnson after the announcement of results, took to his Instagram page to put out this message:

“delighted to win the first ballot, but we have a long way to go”.

The likes of Esther McVey, Andrea Leadsom and Mark Harper with the results, are already eliminated from the race, as we wait patiently to see who finally becomes the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, after the resignation of Theresa May.
