Drake has come hard on the Academy awards/grammys, after winning the Best Rap Song at the ceremony, calling it meaningless.
Drake who said this at his acceptance speech, where he was later cutoff by the Academy organizers, rubbish the whole idea of the Grammys, especially the voting system which most people (fans and musicians alike have criticized in the past) have complained about for years.
Drake receiving his award, said:
“We play in an opinion-based sport, not a factual based sport. It’s not the NBA where at the end of the year you’re holding the trophy because you made the right decision or won the games,” he said.
On the voting system of the Academy the God’s plan rapper said those in charge of making this decision might not be qualified to decide the worth of music from people like himself, Cardi B or others.
Although Drake did not take a shot at anyone (as he did not mention name or names) he could be referring to an award or a category that might has been won by someone that did not go down well with him…and these things are usually the norms at a major event such as the Grammys.
Drake thanking those nominated alongside himself, said the fans are they real judges and not the Academy, saying:
“You’ve already won if you have people singing your songs word for word, if you’re a hero in your hometown,” he said. “Look, if there’s people who have regular jobs coming out in the rain, in the snow, spending their hard-earned money to buy tickets to come to your shows. You don’t need this right here. I promise you, you already won.”
The producers at the Grammys eventually heard enough and cut the rapper’s speech short. Drake won the award over his collab with Travis Scott song “Sicko Mode,” Jay Rock’s “King’s Dead” and “WIN” and Eminem’s “Lucky You.”
