President Muhammadu Buhari has departed Abuja Nigeria, for Poland for the 24th session of United Nations Katowice Conference on Climate Change.
In a statement released a few minutes ago by one of his Personal Assistant on New Media, Mr Bashir Ahmad, on his social media handle, said President Muhammadu Buhari left a few hours ago from the Presidential wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport Abuja, for Katowice, Poland for the United Nations Conference on climate change. He said:
“President Muhammadu Buhari has departed Abuja for Katowice, Poland, to participate in the 24th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP24) under the @UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (#UNFCCC) December 2-4, 2018.”
The conference taking place next week, will be the 24th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, otherwise known as COP24.
It will take place between December 2 and 14 2018, as the upcoming climate talks is said to be the most important round of negotiations since the Paris Agreement was reached three years ago.
The Paris Agreement, reached at COP21 in 2015, will loom large over events at Katowice. It was at COP21 that world leaders committed to making sure global warming stayed “well below” 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. They also agreed to pursue efforts to limit the temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
According to the United Nations, COP24 is important because this year marks the deadline agreed by signatories of the Paris Agreement to adopt a “work program for the implementation” of the commitments they made in 2015.
Other commitments made in Paris include increasing financing for climate action and the development of “national climate plans” by 2020.
President Muhammadu Buhari will join other world leaders who are signatory of the United Nations, to discuss how these objectives are going to be met, and financing of these projects will be done.
