The football world yesterday witnessed if you like, a tragic incident at the ongoing FIFA World cup in Russia, as two of the world best footballers Messi and Ronaldo exit the tournament in a dramatic fashion.
The two representing their respective countries Argentina and Portugal respectively, playing on the same day, could do nothing as they both fell to their opponents who played more as a team than rely on individual talents.

While Messi and his team stumbled into the round of sixteen by what many have tagged “FIFA-Assisted Referee” after they struggled in a group that had Croatia, Iceland and Nigeria, they just did not have it against their opponent in the round of-16.

Having seen them play in their three group games, it was just a matter of time they are booted out of the competition, as they never really showed class or show teamwork like what they did four years ago in Brazil when they reached the finals of the FIFA world cup.

After Croatia to the surprise of many won their group with 9-points, it meant Argentina will be taking on France after coming second. On paper, Argentina had this all day, but that was never going to be the case, as Argentina with most of their players in the age range of 30+plus, going head to head with the much youthful and energetic French team, was asking for too much and the final result clearly explains it all.

The likes of Kylie Mppape stole the show, as he showed what a promising lad he is with his running and intelligent finish in front of goal. He scored a brace, in one of the best games so far at the world cup, as Argentina were humbled by 4-3.

In the other game, which just like the previous one, bookmakers expected Ronaldo and Portugal to win, but again it was a matchup of teams relying on an individual brilliance and another playing as a team.
The Uruguayan as they have done often over the years, playing with the front two who are the most deadliest strikers in world football Cavani and Suarez, showed what a team play and understanding is, as both single-handedly ended Cristiano Ronaldo’s dream of lifting the world cup.
Suarez and Cavani connected brilliantly to score the first and second goals, even after Pepe pulled one back to level at 1-1, Uruguayan team held on as they defended their lead up until the end of the referee’s whistle.

The games were exciting and again we are having superstars such as Messi and Ronaldo who have both shared world best awards for the last decades, still not been able to help their respective countries lift the world cup, just as the previous winners have done. But does this mean the world cup is over?
