The Senator representing Kaduna Central Senatorial zone, Senator Shehu Sani has commended President Muhammadu Buhari for opposing the creation of state police. The Senator who made this statement on his social media page said if allowed, State Police would be used by State Governors against their perceived opponents, as they will gladly enlist their thugs into the Police Force, a situation that will definitely lead to anarchy.
He said with State Governors controlling the Police in their various states, situations will be worse than what is currently going on with the present Nigerian Police Force.
The issue of state police is one of the items proposed in the “Restructuring” of the country and the Constitutional amendment currently going on. So far, the move has met a brick wall, as every meeting set up to look at the issue, both at political party levels and in general discussion and the National Assembly, have all discouraged the setting up of state police, for almost the same reasons raised by the Senator.
Some politicians have also talked about allowing States such as Lagos to have a trial of the State Police, and see how it goes, before introducing it to all other States. But the daily incidents from Lagos State Traffic officials is just too perfect of an example how a Lagos State Police are likely to operate if given a State Police…lol
Senator Shehu Sani while reacting to the opposition of the state police, said:
I commend PMB for his opposition to state police.Despite the weaknesses of Fed Police,a state police will be worse. It will simply be a force of evil at the disposal of state Governors,to be used to suppress perceived opposition and dissenting voices.State police means officially giving uniforms and arms to a Governor’s enlisted thugs.
