A Court in France have ordered a couple to change the first name of their child, Hades for the child’s own interest.
The reference to Greek mythology, where Hades represents the god of the earth and the underworld, is “contrary to the interests of the child”, according to justice. The court will deliver its judgment on April 4, AFP reports.
A choice “contrary to the interests of the child since incontestably referring to the god of the dead and hell”, according to the parquet floor of Saint-Malo (Ille-et-Vilaine). A couple, having chosen the first name of Hades for their child born last September, faces justice, which asks them to change it.
Only a few weeks after the happy event, the couple is surprised: they learn that the deputy public prosecutor of Saint-Malo, warned by the civil status officer of the town hall, asking them to remove this first name from the birth certificate of the child, relates the Pays Malouin .

The prosecution considers that the reference to Hades, considered the master of the underworld in Greek mythology, is not a choice in the interest of the child.
“We chose this first name simply because we would find it pretty”, testified to our colleagues the mother of the child, Kristina Desgres.
“Nobody makes the connection”, still assured the mother. “At the maternity ward, it didn’t shock anyone. On the contrary, people like it,” she said.
“We do not believe that we have chosen a first name prejudicial to him. We did not call him Lucifer or Satan, we are not stupid”, still defend the parents of Hades.
According to data from the INSEE first name file, 32 children were named Hades (with or without an accent) between 1900 and 2021 in France (excluding Mayotte).

Determined to name their son as they wish, the parents of the child took the road to the Saint-Malo court on Friday March 3, accompanied by a lawyer. And to support their case, they took care to get in touch with other parents of little Hades.
