Ex-Head Of Service Mrs Winifred Oyo-Ita Granted N100m Bail

The Federal High Court in Abuja has granted N100million naira bail to the former Head of Service of the Federation, Mrs Winifred Oyo-Ita.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arraigned her over an N3bn alleged scam.

Mrs Winifred Oyo-Ita along with eight others on Monday pleaded not guilty to the 18-count charge of fraud.

The presiding judge, Justice Taiwo Taiwo on Monday granted her bail of N100m with sureties in like sum.

Her lawyer, Paul Erokoro (SAN) says he is applying for bail on behalf of his client who has been on administrative bail of the EFCC.
Lawyers to the other defendants also made an application for their clients.

Justice Taiwo said that the sureties must be resident in Abuja and must be a civil servant not below grade level 17 with property worth N100m while the other surety must show evidence of gainful employment.

The judge said that in view of COVID-19 pandemic, he could not endanger the lives of the defendants by remanding them in EFCC custody.

He, however, directed the defendants must report to the EFCC office everyday between 10 am and 12 Noon for seven days pending when their bail conditions would be perfect.

The judge said if the bail conditions are not perfected after seven days, they would be remanded in EFCC custody.

Other conditions of the bail include that one of the sureties must be a civil servant on Grade Level 17 in and Federal Government ministry, parastatal or agency.

The two other defendants, Garba Umar and Ubonh Effiok were granted bail in the sum of N50m each.

The case has been fixed for 27th, 28th of May, 2nd, 3rd and 4th of June for day to day trial.
