Chelsea are technically out of the race for a top four finish the season, after they were thumped 3-0 by Sheffield United on Saturday at Bramall lane.
The Frank Lampard side who came into the game after a win in their last game against Palace, made just two changes for Saturday’s game. But rather than the changes to impact positively on the team, it backfired.
Sheffield United who clearly have seen the Chelsea game against West Ham, applied similar strategy, as they applied pressure on the Chelsea defense, causing them aalot of troubles at the back.
David McGoldrick was the man that gave the host the first goal of the game. He opened the scoring, pouncing after Kepa Arrizabalaga had saved brilliantly from a deflected Oli McBurnie shot in the 18th minute.
Chelsea’s defence was shaky throughout and they were ruthlessly punished just 15 minutes later when Enda Stevens crossed and McBurnie was left completely unmarked in the six-yard box to power home a simple header.
The damage was completed when McGoldrick capitalised on a dreadful defensive mix-up to plunder his second late in the second half, to draw the cotton on Chelsea hope of a Champions League football next season.
Chelsea who are now on 60points in third place for now, will be hoping for a miracle on Sunday and Monday in both
Leicester City and Manchester United games. If these two teams should win their games in hand against Bournemouth and Southampton respectively, Chelsea will be dragged into fifth when next in action against Norwich on Tuesday.
Another way Chelsea could see themselves in the Champions League next season, if they win their three remaining games, is if Manchester City lose their appeal on Monday.
