Hollywood actress Felicity Huffman bags two weeks prison sentence for her involvement in a college bribery scandal. She was handed the sentence on Friday 13th September in Boston.
The actress who is 56, faced Judge Indira Talwani on Friday afternoon in a federal courtroom in Boston. In addition to the 14 days incarceration for her college bribery scandal, the judge fined her $30,000 and said she would be on supervised release for one year. She will also have to do 250 hours of community service, People had reported.
The report also added that Huffman arrived in court holding the hand of her husband, William H. Macy. She wore a short-sleeved navy blue dress and low-heeled beige pumps.
She tearfully addressed the judge prior to sentencing, saying:
“I accept the court’s decision today without reservation. I have always been prepared to accept whatever punishment Judge Talwani imposed. I broke the law. I have admitted that and I pleaded guilty to this crime (college bribery scandal) . There are no excuses or justifications for my actions. Period,” her statement began.
She continued, “I would like to apologize again to my daughter, my husband, my family and the educational community for my actions.“
Her light sentence has sparked fierce backlash on social media, with many people pointing out the injustice of many citizens who’ve been locked up for lengthy sentences for lesser crimes. Also, many people who struggle financially to enter college and were passed up by people like her daughter also weighed in.
She addressed that community, saying, “And I especially want to apologize to the students who work hard every day to get into college, and to their parents who make tremendous sacrifices supporting their children. I have learned a lot over the last six months about my flaws as a person. My goal now is to serve the sentence that the court has given me. I look forward to doing my community service hours and making a positive impact on my community. I also plan to continue making contributions wherever I can well after those service hours are completed.”
Her mea culpa finished with how she will change her life and hopes to repay her debt to society.
“I can promise you that in the months and years to come that I will try and live a more honest life, serve as a better role model for my daughters and family and continue to contribute my time and energies wherever I am needed. My hope now is that my family, my friends and my community will forgive me for my actions,” she stated.
She is scheduled to turn herself in by Oct. 25, 2019.
