John Singleton dies at 51, as the news of his passing was made known by his family on Monday. He died a week after suffering a major stroke.

The family announced his passing, saying, “John passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family and friends. We want to thank the amazing doctors at Cedars-Sinai Hospital for their expert care and kindness and we again want thank all of John’s fans, friends and colleagues for all of the love and support they showed him during this difficult time.”

Earlier in the day, the decision was made to take the director off of life support. The family said of the decision, “It is with heavy hearts we announce that our beloved son, father and friend, John Daniel Singleton will be taken off of life support today. This was an agonizing decision, one that our family made, over a number of days, with the careful counsel of John’s doctors.”

Singleton became the first African American to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Director for the 1991 film, “Boyz N the Hood.” He was the youngest person to ever be nominated for the award and was also nominated for Best Original Screenplay that year.

His other notable films included “Poetic Justice,” “Higher Learning,” “Shaft” and “2 Fast 2 Furious.”

Singleton also directed the music video for Michael Jackson‘s “Remember the Time,” which starred Eddie Murphy, Iman and Magic Johnson.

John Singleton dies for the second time today after his death was announced some hours ago, but his publicist debunked the news, saying he was still alive and in life support. His family finally made the decision to take him off life support, as the world mourns a legend and one who wrote his name in gold.

Our prayers are with the family at this time, and May His Soul Rest In Peace…
