USWNT Scrape Through To Last FIFAWWC Last 16 After Goalless Draw With Portugal

United States Women’s national team USWNT have qualified for the last 16 of the ongoing FIFA Women’s World Cup, after playing out a goalless draw with Portugal on Tuesday.

The game which saw the USWNT struggle against Portugal took place at Eden Park in Auckland, New Zealand.

The USWNT beat Vietnam 3-0 in its first game of the tournament before drawing 1-1 against the Netherlands, which means they can advance if they win or draw against Portugal.

The Netherlands edged Portugal 1-0 in its first game of the tournament before sharing points with the U.S. And while the United States and debutants Portugal played out a goalless draw on Tuesday, the Netherlands thrashed Vietnam 0-7.

The world’s number one side will now face the winners of Group G, which will be decided on Wednesday with Sweden, the last nation to defeat the USA in a 90-minute game at the World Cup – set to finish top unless there is a 10-goal swing.

After the narrow escape for the United States team, Alex Morgan post-match reaction said:

“It’s tough to finish second. We gave everything; we just didn’t put the ball in the back of the net. In the last few minutes we just had to hold it down, get the result and move on. It’s not the result we wanted, but we move forward.

It’s just not going in the back of the net. We had so many corners, so many opportunities, we got the crosses in. We’ve been unlucky, at times we haven’t followed through with shots or made the right decisions in front of goal – all that combined,”.
